It sounds like you aren't in Japan yet (or else you would know that saying there is a cool place on some street in Sapporo is a little bit useless if you live in Yokohama).

If you live in a big or even biggish city there will be places to hang out etc (I'm not sure about gaijin hangouts though), but in smaller cities there may not be any clubs.

If you live in a rural area there may not be much of anything to do, unless you can leave said rural area. Same with anywhere else in the world.

What a dumb question. No answer we could give would possibly be useful to you, not knowing where you are or what kind of places you are looking for.

gaijin hangouts are lame anyway. Why come all the way to Japan to hang out with westerners?

I will also point out that most of the 'gaijin hangouts' are simply bars that happen to be patronised by foreigners. Japanese go to them too, and there are not any special entry fees or charges. In Osaka and Kyoto they tend to be Irish or British-themed pubs. Most large cities with an expat population will have a sports bar of some kind.

If you can afford a pint of beer or two you should be able to visit them. Private snack clubs with girls standing outside will empty your wallet faster than you can down your first drink so its best to steer clear of them and if you do get your Japanese host to pay for you.

Like the above poster says, I dont come all the way to Japan just to drink beer in an Irish pub with other expats. Japan is far more interesting than that.

Ok for anyone else reading this ^^^^^^^^^^^
these are exactly the kind of tools I want to avoid. Snot faced Japanese-wannabes. I get tired of hanging out with Japanese and wannabe-Japanese ALL DAY LONG. Sometimes you just want to settle down throw back a few with some cowboys and swap a few travel stories. If this is you, post a hangout, if it isn`t, then DONT REPLY.

Im simply amazed by the number of pompous arseholes on this site.

I know there is a salsa scene in Japan, especially in Tokyo. Does anyone know where I can go for salsa dancing and where I can go for lessons? I haven't taken any lessons in awhile and would like to start again. Thanks.

Living in Japan you are not going to be able to avoid Japanese, as they make up 98% of the population. They are EVERYWHERE even in the gaijin hangouts. there are no GAIJIN ONLY bars in Japan. Even better, dont come to Japan at all if you hate them that much.

The only place you can avoid Japanese people is if you barricade yourself in the bathroom and switch off the light.

For the guy who only wants to meet other gaijin:

Osaka

Pig and Whistle
Sam and Daves
Murphy's
The Cellar
Hard Rock Cafe

Kyoto

Taghs
Hill Of Tara
Pig and Whistle

Nagoya

Shooters
Hard Rock Cafe

Tokyo
Gaspanic

While in the UK and in America I met many teachers who spent time in Japan that swear the "gaijin teachers" here rank dead last in terms of friendliness. How many times I've been told about their "I'm all right, Jack!" attitudes and "it's my Japan" crankiness.

I disagree with this, as I have met some wonderful people here.

However comments like the one below are beginning to change my opinion.

Sounds pretty anti-Japanese and xenophobic to me.

I have seen these types before. College frat kids who come over for a year and teach at NOVA to pay off their loans. Sit through eight hours of eikaiwa lessons and then chill out by heading to the nearest Starbucks or Hard Rock cafe. Go home to their one-room NOVA apartment and English speaking room-mates. Spend the whole time in japan in a NOVA-ECC-GEOS gaijin-bubble without learning a stick of Japanese and is here to pay off student loans, get laid and laugh at his students English. As soon as they meet a long-term foreigner who speaks the language or tries to avoid these gaijin frat pack cowboys they are called "wannabes", a kind of gaijin "Uncle Tom" who has gone over to the other side.

Long term expats with an interest in the country and people who pay his salary and keep him employed are 'snot-faced'. No wonder eikaiwas are in the toilet when they have white-trash like this one calling themselves teachers.
