I am taking a trip home next month and I am wondering what the story is with taking cash with me, as opposed to using the post office or golloyd's. Does it work out simpler/cheaper or is it more trouble than it's worth? I know I won't get as good an exchange rate as with lloyd's, right? But is it bag enough to offset the fees? How much can you bring into the US?
Anyone done this? |

I'm not sure, so please double check, or other posters can pipe in, but I heard it was around $10,000 USD before you have to report anything over than that. I would also be curious to know what if you do report that you're carrying more than $10,000 USD, what they do. You should be able to get decent rate at your bank in the states, minus the 2000 yen fee and the bank charge. You're still going to be ahead of the game. Just don't get robbed. |

You're fine. Your home back should will give you a competitve rate compared to Lloyds, if not a better rate. You'll save the transaction fee and the bank charge. It is kind of a hassle though. The bank charge and the Lloyds fee works out to what...$30? If you send through Lloyds now, it will save you the hassle of carrying the money and comparing banks when you get back to the states. |
