Never been to Hokkaido but it seems to be well known for the big tsunami waves they get up there.
Freezing cold in winter. Minus-zero temperatures. |

Hokkaido is cold but not unbearable (if you're tolerant). I assume that since you'll be working for GEOS you won't have to drive. Driving in winter in Hokkaido is not fun. Just a few days ago I got caught driving in a snow/wind storm in Ababshiri (north of where you'll be) and had to turn back because the road was closed. |
