hey guys, i'm interested in teaching in taiwan and hopefully with hess, unfortunately, i was an idiot when i was younger and received a dui. hess is the only company i've researched that specifically lists a criminal record check as a requirement of employment. i imagine the government of taiwan could be interested as well.
so my questions to you guys are - do all schools require this? does the goverment? does it matter that a dui is a misdemeanor and not classified as crime against an individual? can i be thrown out of the country at anytime because this is on my record?
any help is appreciated, thanks. |

It has taken me years to become idiotic, and I'm not changing now!
...well craigzy, in most of the Western US a "DUI" will be taken off of your record after 7 years. If you live in that part of the US then perhaps you have nothing on your file.
hao ma?
good luck. |

A criminal record check is not a requirement of the government as far as being given a work permit to work here. I guess that they assume that you were honest and that you would have admitted to such when you made your original visa application to come here, as in applying for a visitors visa you will be asked to check a box pertaining to a criminal record. Checking this box is probably not likely to prevent you from getting a visitors visa but as I have no inside information about the visa process I am only assuming this.
As far as Hess I have a feeling that they would not be concerned with a DUI from years ago. They are looking for other things! Their requirement for a criminal check is a good one in my opinion and I personally wish that more schools would make this a requirement. In doing so they are obviously hoping to deter certain undesirables from applying to teach at their schools and in the long run this seems to be a very smart move as an 'incident' could be very damaging to the schools reputation let alone to any students involved. |
