Incident number one- opposite the Naval museum. Last week when it rained. 2 blokes shouting at the bus driver because the bus stopped about 5 metres before the actual bus stop. It was the bus drivers fault they were wet. (they didn't have umbrellas.)

Incident number two- on the flyover near the naval museum. On Tuesday a beggar had a sign saying "I'm hungry. Please help" At the precise point of passing him I was rummaging in my bag for a tangerine and found two. In a moment of generousity not normally associated with Scots, I offerred him one. He refused it and asked for money. Yeah like a 50 kurus coin is tastier than a tangerine.

Incident number three - about an hour ago. Having a late lunch and a beer and a read of the paper I asked for the bill. It was 10 lira.(I go to classy places) I only had a 100 note and a 10 note. I gave the 100 note which was refused because they had no change. So I gave the 10 lira note and apologised for not leaving a tip but I only had a 100(which he refused) He then called me a 31 and a Son of a**** for not leaving the 100 with him Rolling Eyes

Does anyone else have experiences like these?

This happens with Taxi drivers aswell. I think it is a new scam that they have come up with in Turkey.

During the summer when i arrived in Istanbul my fiance came to collect me via taxi. Anyway it cost about 8 lira back to his flat. He only had 7 lira change and 20 lira. So he obviously gave the guy the the 20 lira and the taxi driver claimed he didnt have change (which was a blatant lie, if it wasnt then he should have had change!) Anyway, we ended up giving him the 7 lira and received a whole load of abuse in the process. During my stay i noticed that this happened quite a lot.

So the obvious rule is to carry loads of change in Turkey

It happens all the time here ,when ever I just offer the large note and they say" bozuk yok" I just smile and say "get some". Suddenly it appears as if by magic ,I don't need a pocket full of small change any more than a hole in the head .

I've never had a problem Actually no- once in Kayseri I was coming back from the otogar (a standard, straight forward 4 million fare which I'd done regularly for two years) and this young whippersnapper maganda wannabe refused to follow my directions home, took me on the circular route, and proudly waved at his 7million metre upon my eventual arrival outside my home. I gave him 4 million and told him not to be so stupid or he'd lose money in the long run, and slammed the door. He didn't argue.

Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids.
