I'm planing on leaving for Taiwan in the begining of May and I have a few questions.
When I'm applying for my visa, should I get a multiple entry visa or a single entry visa? On the reason for the visit, should I selected tourism? (I've read all of the advice about the merits of getting the 60 day visitor visa).
In general, what type of clothing is considered appropriate for teaching? I don't normally dress like a bum, I'm just wondering how formally I will be expected to dress (especially considering the heat).
I've been asking around for reference letters and my referees how asked what the employers will be looking for in a reference letter. Since I don't really know I thought I'd ask the experts.
Lastly, where are the best job prospects outside of Taipei? I think Taipei is a little too big for me so I'm considering alternatives.
Any or all advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

1) It doesn't matter whether you apply for single or multiple entry visitor's visa as long as you find legal work when you arrive in Taiwan.
2) Clean and casual is usually entirely appropriate. A few schools require formal dress, but they are in the extreme minority. Essentially, most schools aren't very concerned with your dress as long as you are clean and presentable.
3) Reference letters: If you have teaching experience or experience working with children, you should get reference letters from those jobs.
4) It should be no problem to find jobs outside of Taipei, assuming you are a good and qualified candidate
The most important part of being successful in Taiwan is keeping an open mind and being flexible. Focus on the kids and on improving as a teacher and your school will love you. There are frustrations here, like anywhere else, but that is all part of the adventure/challenge...
