purely recreational, as i'm comin from korea. anything to bring/prepare? places to see? looking for the "off the beaten path" type deal, altho hitting up pattaya, bangkok, the islands would be fun for a day or two. but looking more for the authentic/exotic. something eye-opening. (and don't say ladyboys. i'm expecting that too) |

Too late. There is no 'off the beaten path' anymore. Backpackers can and do follow their Lonely Planets to any and every nook and cranny in the world. About the closest you can get is a war zone or a rural area that contains nothing of interest. I hear that rural Eritrea is...uh...'nice'
Incidentally, why do people use 'authentic' in that context? It's a particularly cringe-worthy example of Television English. Is there a counterfeit Thailand somewhere? Do people accidentally go to the wrong one? Do people get arrested for being in possession of forged foreign countries? |

Pak Meng Beach in Trang seems to be devoid of mass foreign tourists. Went there are on New Year's and saw only a couple of farangs, the beach was full of Thais. 500 baht gets you a bungalow opposite the beach. You can go island hopping from there as well.
Not all the big beaches have been farangized yet.......(I hate them that have been, pay too much for everything!) |

Fly to Phnomen Penn (Cambodia) work your way north into Laos and then continue north in Loas and come thru into Thailand and take a bus from Laos border to Chiang Mai Thailand. Hell of a trip, fair few days lost on buses but well worth it. Laos pretty much only has back-packer tourism at the moment so its still Amazing! And Cambodia's off the hook init... |
