Yes, I'm continuing on from my first post regarding the awesome power of laptop greatness... *cough*

OK, I was in Daivd Jones on Friday and was told of this deal. I guess I'd just appreciate any responses on whether I should consider it/look else where/wait til I get to Japan (which is in a week)

I really didn't check out the other post, BUT, I can tell you this. . .

Office Depot has some EXCELLENT deals!

I recently purchased a:
Toshiba Satellite
1.62 Ghz Intel Processor
512 ram
60GB hd
433 fsb, I believe
15" widescreen display
4 usb
wireless internet
dvdrom/cdrw
ati radeon graphics card

Grand total? $500

But, it isn't a MAC.

i won't claim to know much about computers but... it seems a bit pricey. it looks like that is the standard g4(no upgrades). apple lists the price as $1499.00
is there anything else included? extended warranty? mem upgrade? acessories?

on a second look, the 17" retails for $2499. but the specs are different from the 12".

what are you looking to use the laptop for? movies/photo editing/games/work? i would take a dvd & a flash drive to the store and play with the various laptops? see what you like & what you don't. also consider how much you will be travelling with this laptop. a 17" is a monster, they're huge & can be heavy.

happy hunting Very Happy

That's a horrid, crap deal. It's highway robbery.
First off, order directly from apple.com. Supply a university you went to school at. They don't do a background check and will automatically give you a student discount. (http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/routingpage.html)
Buy a MacBook pro (the new line of mac laptops). I have a PowerBook, but wish I could upgrade!

(With the student discount)
Here is the LOW END MacBook:
Specifications
* 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
* 512MB 667 DDR2 - 1 SO-DIMM
* 80GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
* SuperDrive (DVDRW/CD-RW)
* AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
* Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
* 15.4-inch TFT Display
Subtotal $1,799.00

Here is the HIGH END MacBook:
Specifications
* 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
* 1GB 667 DDR2 - 1 SO-DIMM
* 100GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
* SuperDrive (DVDRW/CD-RW)
* AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
* Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
* 15.4-inch TFT Display
Subtotal $2,299.00

You can further tweak those systems by adding optional memory, increased processing speed, and a larger/faster hard drive.

First off, that price is in AUD not USD hence the price difference and AUD$2499 is the standard Apple price for the 12" Powerbook.

Le Creature, I have that same machine and am using it right now. The only difference is I upgraded to a 100GB HD and bought 1GB in 3rd party RAM. www.streetwise.com.au is a good place for RAM upgrade.

Personally, if you can wait, I'd wait for the 12" Intel Macbooks but the 12" Powerbook is a great machine. Apple OS X vs. Windows is a no-brainer.

Don't forget about the Tourist Refund Scheme too! So whatever laptop you buy, provided you have it as carry-on luggage you get 10% back (well, just under 10% - the GST) provided you follow the correct steps.

What are you wanting the laptop for? If it's just for emails, internet etc. and you want an Apple then I'd say an iBook.

You should ask yourself what are you going to do with your computer. If you're just going to use the internet, do some word processing, store some pictures and music, just get the cheapest thing possible. The computers you are looking at are way too much computer if you just intend to do the stuff above.

Well here's what I did. I went to Akihabara and I bought a laptop at Softmap.

For 170,000 yen ( I have no idea what that is in AU dollars) this is what I got:

1.6 Ghz Pentium M
1 GIG RAM
80 GB HD
128 MB ATI Radeon X800
Wireless card

I use it for gaming and I find it can handle everything I've thrown at it so far. We'll see how it deals with Oblivion after I finish downloading it Wink
