A gaijin toroku shomeisho is the little plastic card you carry around in your wallet.
The other one is a piece of paper issued by the city or ward office confirming your identity and is often asked for by embassies etc. I applied for a Chinese visa and had to get one from my ward office. Foreigners can not get koseki or juminhyo (resident certificate) and the paper acts as a substitute and confirms your name, address etc, |

What information is usually contained on a Gaikokujin toroku genpyo kisaijiko shomeisho ? Is it essentially all the same data as what you have on a Gaikokujin toroku shomeisho ?
If the information contained on them is the same, what is the purpose of having two seperate documents? |

Its the same information (printed in Japanese) with name, DOB, address, visa status, date of visa expiry where applicable and proves that you are a legal foreign resident in Japan.
You keep your gaijin card with you but you can hand the paper to whoever needs it (in my case it was the Chinese consulate who needed it for a tourist visa to China). you are not going to leave your ARC behind so the document replaces the ARC. |
