It happened... All of my students have been telling me, "You won't leave Istanbul. You'll fall in love with it..." to which I unwaveringly have been replying, "Nah. I hate it here. It's a big ugly city. I'm going back to my beautiful, clean, sane Eastern Europe..."
But it happened... I fell in love with Istanbul... At least enough that I'm considering sticking around a bit longer. However this dersane stuff is killing my social life. Don't get me wrong, I love my job, but I need some normal hours if I'm going to have a good life here next year....
So, any suggestions? I've got experience. I've got BA's. I've got an MA in Lit. I'm well dressed and can act responsible for several hours at a time. I'm thinking University jobs, but maybe you've got other suggestions.
Anyone know of any open positions here in the city for the next academic year? At your Uni? At your high school? Any PMs would make me smile. Thanks in advance. |

most universities don't advertise. If you have any friends working at unis get them to put a good word in/introduce you to who ever does the hiring. Or pick a uni at random and look at their website, you'll probably find a working with us section. Best of luck in your search. |

Try the Istek schools they are always looking. Pay rate starts at around +$1300 plus housing and privet insurance up to 1600/1800 depending on your paper work.
P.M if your intereseted.
Good luck.
BTW have you been here for more than three years. That seems to be the cut off point anything over three years and it starts to become real hard to leave. (14 years) |

You are absolutely right!
When I finished my first year contract in Taiwan, the director of my school (Taiwanese), asked me if I was going to stay another year. When I answered "yes", she said "OK, but here's my advice - don't stay more than 2 years. I see it all the time, once someone stays away from home more than 2 years, they can't leave here and they can't reconnect there".
I have only been here 6 months or so, but I noticed people seem to have a real love/hate relationship with Istanbul, they gripe, moan and complain - but when you ask them if they'll leave....NEVER!! |

If my school wasn't at the literal bottom of the world, I coulda, woulda, shoulda jumped already... However, it wouldn't be much of a jump, more of a small hop. Like a miffed bunny rabbit, or a perturbed frog. |

Additionally to not advertising in papers, most unis won't have positions advertised on their websites. Don't be dissuaded, this doesn't mean there aren't any openings.
I'll think about compiling a contact list for unis in Turkey. |
Here's a good link for that:
