What's it like? IOW, what's good, bad, etc...
Also, a quick salary question:
Is $317,772 Mexican pesos per annum an average salary for the area? I'm only now starting to consider Mexico as a viable alternative when I finish my MA (albeit it will be a while), so please bear with me!
Thanks--

Hey Jiz,
I don't know much about Cuilian, having never been there. That is a pretty good pay range, I assume from ITESM? They have many campuses all over the country, the pay is a little different at each, persumably to reflect the cost of living in each city. I know a couple people who have worked at the Cuilian campus, they enjoyed it. I'd imagine that you'd pay 3000 to 5000 a month for rent up there, if that will help give you an idea.
There aren't many posters on here from the northern part of Mexico, I like to think its because they are to busy dogging stray bullets! But more than likely its because they have more money to spend than us in the south so are out enjoying their lives! |

I do believe the reference is to the ITESM Campus there. I remember chatting with the director there some time ago ( I work at Campus Toluca). At the time I didnt pursue the job because it was purely for prepa and I hadnt taught it at all yet. Different campuses pay differently, I think in part because of how much they can afford and if the locations have other attractions or not. Toluca pays good because its a small industrial town that, frankly speaking, is ugly.
The drawback to Culiacan is that its really freaking hot but moreover, Sinaloa is the most dangerous state in Mexico (lots of drug trafficking going through there) |

Yes, Culiacan is pretty "wild west" these days with target hits taking place. (They are pretty specific in hitting who they set out to, so the gang related drive-by shootings we frequently have in Vancouver Canada still scare me worse) Other than that and the intense heat and rude drivers it is quite okay. (You need air conditioning in your bathroom in the summer months!) The city has a neat cultural scene and a good educational system. Being the State capital, it is the pulse and that's where the money is.
The Culichis work hard and then hit the beaches on off times to play hard. We have relatives there (AND there is a Home Depot there) so we make frequent trips. BTW, that is a very high wage. Some lawyers don't make that much in my area. Melees correct. The cost of living is higher there too. Apartments are quite expensive in the decent areas and a little harder to find, but I am sure your school could help with that. I think it would be an okay place for a year or so. |

I've always wondered what it would be like to have an annual salary in six figures... Maybe that's the 'danger money' for living in Culiacan. Still, I could be tempted to dodge a bullet or two for that kind of money. |
