|

Hello everyone,
I was hoping some of you could help me out. I would like to teach at one of the "big schools", like NOVA, or AEON. But in college I graduated with a 2.1 GPA, and accumulated an underage drinking ticket, and a Public disorderly conduct charge (Too much partying accounted to all of the above). I am 25 now, and have been out of college for 3 years now. I'm just wondering how much stock the schools put in your GPA and/or your criminal history (I assume they'll do a background check).
I'm just trying to figure out what kind of chance I have here.
Thanks a lot in advance. |

I didn't have to submit a background check (I'm clean!) whether they did one on me I don't know. I actually can't remember if I had to submit my grades to them or not. Maybe it was just the degree. |

Eikaiwas don't care about your grades. They probably don't even know what GPA means unless you explain it to them.
Some employers ask for a criminal offense record on their applications. Not sure if they are looking for misdemeanors or just felonies. I wouldn't worry about your two charges, though. |

A lot of NOVA teachers come from other countries which dont have GPA, other than the US (I come from NZ) . NOVA doesnt know or care, as long as you show your degree. They dont even care about the name of your school.
Criminal history means felonies such as drugs prostitution or something that landed you a prison term. Misdemeanors don't count and are no more serious than a parking ticket.
Don't tell them and they will never check. Your chance is as good as any and comes down to how you do in the interview. And yes, wear a suit and tie. |

Neither the Japanese government nor the language school chains can access confidential files on you from abroad unless you are under investigation for a serious offence in Japan and a judge makes an application to the US to see your police files.
I wouldn't worry about past misdemeanours; neither would I mention them on a job or visa application. |
