Nova Teachers Teach for Food!

Nova teachers offer lessons for food

TOKYO A labor union representing teachers and staff at the failed
Nova Corp said Thursday it will set up a relief fund for the teachers
and a program whereby students can take their language lessons from
their Nova teachers in exchange for basic food items or a meal.

I find this absolutely degrading. This really will make all English teachers look bad. Many Japanese have a bad enough image of an English teacher in Japan as it is. If people are at the point, where they don't have enough money for food they should go home. Or accept a position in China or Korea.
Nova filing for bankruptcy protection didn't happen overnight. It was going on for months. People should have saw this coming in September and acted accordingly.

Completely agree. Anyone who comes over here should at least have money for a plane ticket home in case of emergencies.

Maybe some of those same people should study past participles too.

Note: This is only a website and message board. Thus, to insult one's grammar is meaningless. Shall I check all your posts for errors?

Ultimately, most of all the teachers deserved their fate. If one lives in a foreigner country for years and doesn't save any money. They simply waste on alcohol or whatnot, they deserve the repercussions.

And even your insult "Maybe some of those same people should study past participles too" is illogical. Do you mean "some of those same people" = referring to nova teachers should have studied past participles?

Ultimately, ?most of all the teachers deserved their fate. If one lives in a foreigner country for years and doesn't save any money. (Main clause is where?) They simply waste on alcohol or whatnot, they deserve the repercussions.

And even your insult "Maybe some of those same people should study past participles too" is illogical. Do you mean "some of those same people" = referring to nova teachers WHO should have studied past participles? (Or simply, '=Nova teachers should have studied past participles?')

I am not going to even bother to insult someone with an id name of fluffyhamster. The name in itself does that.

I'm surprised that you chose to point out the (all too common) past participle error rather than the comma splice, run-on sentence, and sentence fragment.

What is more important? A flaw in logic or grammar?

People write on boards more akin to how they would speak in real life. Flaming someone on a message board for minor grammar mistakes is absolutely retarded. That argument has be done on numerous message boards. You people simply need to get a life.

Ultimately, another id will come and attempt to ridicule my post. So consider this my last post on this topic. If you people cared for Nova teachers, you should do something about it. I have met numerous Nova teachers in Tokyo. All of them deserved their fate. They were all aware of Nova's impending doom, but chose not to do anything.

By accepting food for English lessons or offering ridiculously low fees for hourly lessons, it affects the whole market. It sets a bad precedent for wages and how we are all perceived in Japan as English teachers.

If you are so prepared to be unsympathetically critical of other people you can hardly complain at similar treatment.

Apart from the 'cared...should' bit, that was pretty eloquent. Move on up to English 201! Yey! Razz Wink

Let's be happiness together people.

All the prescriptivists with their grammar rules! I say be free!

Maybe the NOVA people want to stay in Japan and are looking for other opportunity. Anyone who lives in Japan will agree that language instruction is definately needed! Maybe they just need something to tide them over until things pick up for them.

There's a whole country outside of Tokyo too. The air is clean and the cost of living is very low.
