|
|
Recently I've found a bookshop in Shenyang with OUP and CUP reference books for really good prices and have been spending some useful spare time reading about the psychology for language teachers and the study of second language acquisition . I've just been accepted onto a DELTA course and have al list below of books I need(should delve into) for the course . As I seem to have found cheap books so far in China so far I was hoping that I could pick up a lot of these cheaply somewhere? Does anybody know if this will be possible and where ? I am in Shenyang and travelling to Beijing soon . Where in Beijing would I be most likely to pick up the books below? If anyone can help I'd be most grateful.
The list is below -
The Language Instinct Pinker, S (1994) Penguin
How Languages Are Learned Lightbown P & Spada N (1993) OUP
Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching, Larsen-Freeman D (1986) OUP
Learning Teaching, Scrivener J (1994) Heinemann
The Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics, Richards J,PIatt J & Weber H 1985)
Grammar For English Language Teachers Parrott M (2001)CUP
About Language, Thornbury S (1997) CUP
Teaching Collocation Edited Lewis M (2000) Thomson Heinle
Beyond the Sentence Thornbury S (2005) Macmillan
How to Teach Pronunciation Kelly G (2000) Longman
Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics, Richards J, Platt J & Weber H (1985) Longman

There is a huge Xinhua bookstore in the central part of Beijing - the biggest in China I'm told. I did visit once and they had a large English language teacher book section.
In Shenyang I've visited the big pink bookstore by the TV tower - Northern Book Town - that has some good stuff. Also try Hua Chu bookstore. The branch on Chang Jiang Jie was good but it closed. I think it was consolidated with the downtown store that I've never been to. I'm told it's near San Hao Jie. |

I've always had good luck at the Foreign Language Bookstore on Wang Fu Jing in Beijing. I'm betting it's about the only place you'll stand a chance of finding such specific materials.
Head north on Wang Fu Jing - Oriental Plaza on your right. Ignore the huge bookstore just before the McDonald's, both on your right. When you've almost come to the end of stone-paved pedestrian zone, look for the very non-flashy Foreign Language Bookstore on your left. You'll probably need to go to the top floor to find the good stuff.
I've found good ESL/EFL materials published in the UK and US there - including a copy of Swann's, Reward Resource Packs, Harmer's 'How to Teach English', etc. Best of luck! |

you'll find in good time that none of those books are of much if any practical value to you or your students.
i would particularly advise you against wasting your money on Pinker's ludicrously irrelevant and pedagogically useless musings. |

BTW, the Lightbrown and Spada is now in a revised (second?) edition. The Richards et al AL dictionary is now in a third edition. Both of these newer editions were published in the last couple of years or so. |
