2 American professors are travelling July and August in Mexico. We are looking to rent an inexpensive apartment in Mexico City (prefer Polanco or Coyoacan) and heading most likely to Yucatan peninsula in August. Open to all suggestions.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Check out segundamano.com.mx though July and August listings won't be out unless they specialize in renting to foreigners.
One other thing...I don't think I've ever heard inexpensive used in the same breath as Polanco or Coyoacan. Check Roma, Del Valle, Narvarte, and Napoles as well. |

Guy,
Thanks for your posting. We heard that Polanco or Coyoacan are expensive but thought we would aim high. We are hoping to find someone more interested in having reliable and responsible professionals take care of their place while they were gone than making a big profit. This is something we have done with our own home.
Can you rate Roma, Del Valle, Narvarte, and Napoles as far as safety, convenience to rest of city, etc. are concerened?
Thanks in advance.

Steve,
Most of the regular readers of this board don't have extended summer vacations. You might want to try the mexconnect message boards, you might have more luck hitting the retiree population. There are a lot of snow birds in Mexico who might head back to the US in those months.
Good Luck, |

Not sure if this will help you as they are not in the specific areas that you are looking -- but here are a few places I found when I was looking for a one month furnished rental for March. I would also suggest looking on Craig's list in Mexico City - I know I saw others there. One other to search for is Departamentos Sol y Mar - they looked very nice but I remember they were expensive. Hope this helps!
http://www.casatarami.com - $550 US per month
they look very small but nice with a patio and includes wireless broadband
www.hotel-departamentos-avilla.com
Studios - 5,263 pesos per month
One bedroom - 7,467 pesos per month
Internet is 200 pesos per month additional |

Ditto Melee's post. Summer vacation for people here is a little shorter than may suit your needs as well.
Roma and Del Valled are south-central colonias. Both are large, with subways and bus routes running through them. I'd call them safe, except for living right next to a subway stop.
Narvarte borders Del Valle to the east. A little less connected transportation-wise, but otherwise safe. Turn anything down that has an address directly on Tlapan Ave. (major thoroughfare)
Napoles borders Del Valle to the west - a little pricey but nice. Any street names that are US states are good, or in and around the World Trade Center.
I should add Condesa neighbourhood as well. Bohemian, just west of Roma, central, pricey, best restuarants in town.
Living on an Insurgentes Ave address would be noisy.
Hope that helps. |

Thanks to you both for the help. I saw http://www.casatarami.com on the limited Craigslist choices of rentals in Mexico City. The pictures are really nice and I agree the place does look small but doable. I looked at the map, on their site, however, and it seems that the location is right off, what looks like, a major thoroughfare.
Someone recommended rwww.hotel-departamentos-avilla.com on Frommers.
I can't find the link for Departamentos Sol y Mar in Mexico City.
Question: Where did you, kitkat1 end up renting?
Again thanks to you both for all the information. I will work on it more this weekend. |

Here's the link to Sol Y Mar
http://www.solymarmexico.com/
And a few more:
http://www.apartments.com.mx/
www.hotel-departamentos-avilla.com
http://www.extendedstaymexico.com/whatis.html
I was looking for a place for one month only in the event that my boyfriend's apartment was not finished. In the end, it was ready so I've been staying here. He did look at several places for us and he liked the ones on Malitzan (apartments.com.mx) and Casa de la Condesa (extendedstaymexico.com) but he said that one but more like a junior suite in a hotel.
I would also continue searching on the web - I remember that I came across a few other places in Polanco, etc. that were being rented by individuals but were very expensive and out of my price range.
Good luck! |

i would give a pass on avilla. i lived there for 5 months and it's overpriced. it's also not secure, is centrally located but in a dumpy area (in front of buenavista, on a major thoroughfare, incredibly noisy, and the whole zone smells like sh*t because that's what people are doing in the street in front of your window). i stayed that long out of pure laziness, and the fact that i got the room with the best view in the building. i'm glad i'm out of there now for the above reasons, mainly noise and insecurity.
good luck.
have also been to casa tarami and met the guy. in fact he's on craigslist because i gave him the website. it's not a bad place. near a major street but not on it, and pretty quiet anyway. you should check it out but there are surely better deals nearby. |
