As the subject suggests, I'm hoping to teach in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico or thereabouts for the next school year, 2006-07. I'm a certified English teacher with 8 years of experience in private schools in Canada. Does anyone have advice on how I can look for a job there? I'd greatly appreciate any information.

The best method would be to go there in person with copies of your resume in hand, and start knocking on doors. You should know that you will probably have a hard time finding teaching work in SMA, as it is one of the most 'gringo-ized' locations in Mexico; there are a lot of ex-pats there to compete against.

Would it be better to try Queretaro or another town near San Miguel?

Would it be easier to teach French in that area? I'm fluent and have some experience teaching it.

Queretaro would indeed be easier, simply for not hosting a large ex-pat community like SMA. You might also look at Leon, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Guadalajara, Pachuca, Aguascalientes...and the list goes on for cities in the central Mexico area.

You might come across opportunities to teach French, but not nearly as many as English. La Alianza Francesa is a good place to check on that.
