I just realised, I am going to be in Japan during the 2006 football World Cup...

as an Australian in Japan...when Australia are playing Japan in the group stage, surely I'd be able to find a bar or club somewhere that are showing the game that I'd be safe to watch it and have a bit of friendly banter right?

I'm not sure yet where in Japan i will be, but I will be sorely disappointed if I can't see some football, especially Australia and England matches.

hey dont worry. It will be on in many many bars. And this isnt England....you can watch a game here with rival supporters and not end up with a glass in your face. Very nice atmosphere:)
Still, if Australia meet in England, dont come to my bar. Evil or Very Mad

Don't worry about any bar fights here.
I saw the semi-final game between Germany and England in a Berlin bar during the World Cup in 1990. My brother and I were the only England fans and when England was up 1-0, we got a little worried. Suffice it to say, I'm glad Germany won or we may not have made it out alive.

I saw the same match at Gatwick airport, everyone in the terminal crowded around a TV to watch the penalty shoot-out.

On the train home angry mobs were banging on the windows demanding "You German?"

Australia vs Japan - the group's wooden spoon decider.

Dont worry about any trouble, japanese fans have to be the tamest in the world.

I follow Gamba Osaka, and recently watched them thrash Cerezo Osaka 6-1. I was in the Cerezo part of the ground and jumped around like a complete dill everytime Gamba scored. No one even raised an eyebrow.

If I had done that in England I would have got a severe kicking, even if it wasnt a derby game.

as strange as it may seem, the friendly atmoshphere at football matches is what I find to be the least appealling aspect of watching football in Japan.

I totally agree.

Football is less enjoyable in Japan and in Asia because it's too friendly.

I love taunting the away fans and that 'threat' of trouble.

I am pleased it isnt just me who feels that way. Although i hope that people dont falsely assume I chose my username to represent my behaviour at football stadiums!! lol

Sweeping generalisation. At least we can watch a game of cricket over here without hearing racist remarks from the crowd...

The fact of that matter is, for an Australian, this will be amazing no matter what happens. I've waited all my life for this, and I am living the dream just by seeing my country among the best in the world.

No matter how we perform, it is still going to be one hell of a great time for me.
