we've heard some "horror stories", many reported problems, and a high failure rate among new foreign teachers (FTs) in China.
This is disturbing, a disservice to the schools and the students, and an embarrassment to professional-minded FTs.
i want to find out what are the problems' commonalities, and what can be done to prevent these in the future. please help me.
if you are a new FT in China (less than 6 months), please answer these questions. please answer honestly, and don't exaggerate.
What is your age, sex, and nationality?
Is English your native language / do you speak standard English?
How many months have you taught English in China?
A "Public" or "private" school? University, college, high school, middle school, primary or Kindergarten?
How do you feel about your living conditions (school-supplied housing)? 1 = hate it. 2 = unsatisfactory/unpleasant. 3 = satisfactory/no complaints. 4 = very satisfactory/pleased. 5 = love it.
How do you feel about your school administrations treatment and fairness with you (concerning your contract, teaching schedule, duties, and other obligations)?
1 = terrible. 2 = unsatisfactory. 3 = satisfactory/no complaints. 4 = very
satisfactory/pleased. 5 = they are extra helpful/gracious.
What are the biggest problems you have experienced?
If youve had no problems worth reporting, dont answer.
Mark up to 6 answers, 1 being your biggest problem.
