I'll *visa application willing* be heading to Japan at the end of May.

Would there be any point in taking, along with my textbooks, my essential items and plenty of green and gold attire, these following items:

Soccer boots, shinpads and some footy socks.

My handphone.

The handphone for the one reason that I love it to bits and I couldn't bear one of my opportunistic siblings taking it while I am away. It won't work in Japan right? I bought it in Singapore last year.

And the soccer gear? I was pretty upset about not being able to play this year, would there be any chance of me finding a place to have a kickabout or a team to tag along with in Japan? I don't really want to take all my kit along and have it sitting in a wardrobe for a year.

Depending on where you are, if you are in Hyogo area the Kobe Regatta and Athletic club maybe fields soccer teams and has many foreign members and a well-stocked bar.

I have no idea about joining amateur soccer clubs here.

There are soccer clubs EVERYWHERE in Japan. If you want to join one you will have NO trouble finding one to join, even in a small out of the way town. Actually, because of the weird way construction contracts get dolled out here, often times the best athletic centers are way out in the boondocks. But be aware that most soccer clubs in Japan are indoor, so no cleats. Have fun!

Just to give you an idea of the money spent on football (its not even a majority sport, except for the professional J-league), the Japanese government built eleven brand new soccer stadiums in Japan for the world cup that are virtually unused. Billions of yen of white elephant construction pork for two weeks of soccer in 2002. MOst of these stadiums are out in the boonies and require large wide open spaces, a rarity in crowded Japan.

I just want to be able to play.

5 years playing for my local doesn't really make me a J-League standard player Laughing

If you are a larger size shoe then definately bring your boots in fact bring a couple.

Aside from tht I wouldn't bother unLess you're really big. In Japan, whatever activity you pursue you, you can never have enough equipment.

Haha that doesn't bother me! My old club had 2 pitches, with at least 4 or 5 games every weekend of the season, so any grass cover on that park was soon long gone!

Indoor? I played it a few times, never really gotten into it, but any football is good football.

Just wondering Eva because the outdoor courts are springing up like wildflowers around here.

I think I have seen this around the board somewhere, but couldn't find it again.

What is my best option internet-wise?

Is it best to buy a notebook in Australia and taking it over there, or would I be better off buying one when I am in Japan?

My father was told by my aunt who was told by my cousin that its best to have a notebook with you, but she didn't say whether she took one over or bought one there.

Eva,
For goodness' sake, don't lug a desktop computer over here. Get a laptop in your home country. They have built-in power converters, so you won't have to worry about that.

You could get an English version here, but would you like to deal with a salesman in broken English, or try it in 100% English back home? Many Japanese things come with special warranties and extras, so if you think you can handle all that in Japanese and broken English, be my guest.

Your Internet options are huge. Sadly, Japan offers too many options on such things, so it may be hard to choose, but at least you can get high speed lines almost anywhere. If you go with NTT, your phone bill and Internet bill combined will cost about 5000 yen.
