I spent a few weeks traveling around Thailand recently, which I really enjoyed and met some great people along the way. I looked at a few teaching positions that I was interested in, and would have liked to live and work in Thailand for a couple of years. But, the salaries....... it really changed my mind about teaching in Thailand. I couldn't see how I could save any money at the going rate! I think it would take at least 2 years before I could build up to a reasonable salary. Everyday comsumer items are becoming more expensive but the salaries are remaining the same. Maybe I'm wrong... Anyway, Thailand a nice place for a vacation and meeting other people.
So, it looks like I'm going back to China. Found a very nice position starting there in May. The working conditions are excellent, the company pays for a fully-furnish apartment, $1000 airfare allowance. With the salary in the contract I can save between 7-9000$ a year. I couldn't see myself doing that in Bangkok.
Enjoy Thaialnd guys!!! A great country to visit.

Too true......fellow superhero Rocketboy...... trouble is in Thailand there's loads of stuff to spend money on, trips to take, places to eat etc etc that you need about $2000 every month to do the place justice.
That's why it's best visited as a holiday destination and those 35,000 baht a month jobs are best left to the guys who go there to get a girlfriend first and foremost and don't care two hoots about the meagre lifestyle they will endure.
Me i got paid near enough 50,000 a month there for 12 months and i am not ashamed or embarassed to say that i usually got through the lot after about 3 weeks....!
You stay there in Chiona....stick that cash where it belongs in the bank ..then hop on over to Thailand with enough to live like a king for a while!!
That's the spirit!!! |

Sorry rocketboy and boy wonder but I don't see how a Chinese salary is worth sticking in the bank. A friend of mine came over to Japan from China and she won a whole months Chinese salary on pachinko in two hours of playing.
I think the point is:

If that isn't sarcasm then you're seriously misinformed boy wonder. Very rare that a salary in China is going to allow you to live like a king.
If I am wrong however.... I don't mind hearing about it. |

yep.........if saving money is the aim...........Japan or Korea is the way to go. From the day I got here, 8 years ago. I have never saved less than $1000 a month.......in fact most of the time double it and more.
Times change though, but even now.....$1000 is very very doable. |

Angrysoba.....
My former Thai salary less rent....approx $750 a month
A Chinese salary and no rent to pay....approx $700 a month.
The difference is ( for me anyway) that there is less to spend money on in China so therefore the ability to save more is there.
In Thailand though there is too much choice of things/places to spend that money.
Rocketboy could save a fair chunk of his salary if he so wished and then come over to Thailand and have a good time. |

That's what I did. Saved some money and had a nice vacation in Thailand.
I don't know why some people say the salaries in China are lousy. How much money you can earn in China is up to the individual. Some teachers earn a low salary of 3500RMB($400) and other teachers can easily earn over 10,000RMB-20,000 a month. It depends on you, if you have experience, the teaching degree, and motivation.
Boywonder.....I'm no superhero. You say there isn't much to spend your money on in China. Hello... in China there are tourist attractions all over the country, western pubs in any city of considerable size, some of the best restaurants in the world, yes, they do have starbucks and all those western chain places. And also, I don't have the attitude going around places living like a king!!! |

Oh dear Rocketboy......did you not realise my posting was tongue in cheek.....!!!
Sorry to hear that you are no superhero and that you have no intention of living like a king in Thailand. Does that mean you stay in Khao San Road
As for things to spend your money on in China......granted the tourist attractions are numerous but having sampled the nightlife and western style pubs of both Shanghai and Beijing i wouldnt say i would beat a path to their doors too often. |

Spending US$35 a day (after rent) in Bangkok. Hmmm. And you claimed you did NOT hang out in touristy places and you lived in a non-farang neighbourhood??? No wonder you experienced so much crime. You were either a drunkard or a handy mugging target. |

Mr Cowell,
Both!
I never go to bed without polishing off at least one bottle of Glenfiddich a day and a couple of the Sheraton bars finest hand rolled Cuban cigars. |
