|
|
Hello everyone.
I've recently been informed that I have a place on the JET Programme '06, and I'm being posted in Shirakawa-city, Fukushima pref. While I've done a fair bit of research into Japan, I have to say that my knowledge of the place is slim-to-none, and the likes of wikipedia don't really help much. Can anyone shed some light for me? Preferably someone who's currently there or has recently been to the place.
Quite simply, what's the place like?
Any info would be great. Thanks,
Phil |

Shirakawa (???; -shi) is a city located in Fukushima, Japan.
The 2003 estimated population was 48,297 and the density in that year was 410.44 persons per km. The total area was 117.67 km. However, on November 7th, 2005, Shirakawa Shi incorporated the neighbouring villages of Taishin, Higashi and Omotego, bringing the population to approximately 66,000.
The city was founded on April 1, 1949.
Shirakawa has schools, middle schools, high schools, banks, a post office, and parks. Shirakawa is accessed by a nearby expressway, the Tohoku Expressway and routes 289 and 294.
Claims to Fame
Local residents point to the local variation of Ramen as the town's main claim to fame, and some will assert that it is the most famous in all of Japan. The main attractions of the town, aside from the restaurants, include Kominejo ('Small Peak Castle') and Nanko ('South Lake') Park. |
