Who would you call to report someone for overstaying their visa?

A rat-snitch.

Oh, you don't mean what you would call the person who rats someone out. You mean who to call in order to be the rat.

Well, I'm sure I don't know. But even if I did, I don't think I'd pass it along.

Here's how it breaks down in my book:

Reporting someone for overstaying their visa = rat-snitch.

Reporting someone for petty crimes = rat-snitch.

Reporting someone for drugs outside of your home = rat-snitch.

Reporting someone for drugs which you might take the fall over = concerned resident/citizen.

Reporting someone for crimes of violence = concerned resident/citizen.

-- Better yet, why don't you just tell us what the alleged crimes are, how you know for certain your guy is guilty, and we'll let you know whether you're a rat-snitch or a concerned resident/citizen.

Immigration office in the nearest city I guess. The police will also handle it as he/she breaking japanese immigration law.

Stealing from me and others, physical assault.
I think these are two good reasons that directly effect me.

Well assault will definitely get him arrested if you have physical proof and witnesses. They will then bust him for overstaying while he's in custody. Japanese jail is no holiday camp.

Arrests will result in a conviction 99% of the time. Police can hold him up to 21 days in detention before they charge him with any crime. You need to make the charges stick first though.

If what you claim is true, why bother with immigration? If you can substantiate the theft and assault, he (she?) is gone.

What they can expect if they get locked up in Japan

Deportation usually follows a spell in jail. There was a poster on another forum who spent 40 days in jail on some offence before they chuck out of the country.

Thanks Paul, I was not, though I would have been had I slipped up again. I was in a city jail, not far from Fuchu. Fuchu is a prison and I befriended a gangster on his way there for a 14 year stretch, heard loads of stories about it too, you don't want to go there.

Yes. Do tell. I think it would be very interesting to hear about in more detail.
