|
|
Greetings all,
Seeking knowledge from those in the know, and care to share their insights:
Is 13,000 Omani Rials a fair salary for a doctorate holder who is offered a lecturership in education?
Also, is a 4,000 OR a fair allowance for utilities, local transportation, schooling cost, and airline tickets for two adults and three children?
I would appreciate any credible information anyone would like to share. In anticipation, thank you.

How much experience does this person have? It seems low to me... but since it is only a 'lectureship' position, I guess he doesn't have much experience. This is not much more than an experienced person with an MA would make.
What country is this person from? If there are 3 kids in school, costs would be very high for an American or British school, but the Indian or Pakistani or Filipino or Arabic curriculum schools would be cheaper.
I would say that this person needs to research what his costs would be for annual tickets to his home country, what the costs are for schooling his children, and then decide if this makes sense for them financially.

VS, thanks for responding:
This person is non other than me. I am an American citizen, who has some 14 years of adjunct language teaching experience at universities in the US, teaching not less than two courses per semester, including developing programs. Also, I have taught education courses.
As well, I have some 10 years of fulltime K-12 education, (including administrative/quasi-administrative experience). In addition, I have three master's degrees, in Arabic, TESOL and multicultural education. Also, I have a doctorate in education, (completed last year), and I have several scholarly publications.
I thought the offer was insulting. But, I wanted to confirm that it is so before I reject it with a note specifiying the reason.

Yes... you are correct. I'm not sure why they are only offering you a lectureship rather than as a professor. It could be that they don't 'need' or have a budgeted opening for a professor. Oman is definitely not one of the rich Gulf countries. Also, the majority of the professors in the Education department tend to be Egyptians. This may have pulled the pay scale down.
With your credentials you should be able to do much better in the UAE or Qatar. You could try just informing them that with your education and experience, you would 'naturally' only be interested in a position as at least an associate or asst prof (or whatever they call the different levels...) bargain at bit... if they won't budge, just move on...
It may have something to do with the fact that it appears that you do not have experience on your CV at the higher levels, but it would seem to be time to move up to it. (therein lies the problem of being stuck in the adjunct h e l l of the American system.)
Good Luck...

You didn't mention whether accommodations are provided. Granted, you have excellent experience and a full bowl of alphabet soup after your name to your credit. However, Oman is not oil rich and the salary plus benefits amounts to over $44,000 (tax free!). Give Oman a try for a year; it's one of the best places in the ME and ,who knows, you just might be offered something better in the future. Best of luck. |
