Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Montreal job market. I'm going to be moving to Montreal in August to work with my partner. I have lived in France for the past two years. I have taught english to Children, Corporate Clients and in a University. I have my TEFL Certificate from Bridge Linguatec Online. I also have a Bachelors Degree from an American University. Currently working on a Masters.

Can anyone comment on the job market in Montreal? I have heard there are many possibilities for part time positions. That isn't a problem for me. One full time job, two part time jobs...same thing in the end. However, what i'm looking to see is if the job market is good in the moment. Any comments on pay scales, hours and general benefits with companies would be great!

Look forward to hearing more.

-Duane

The summer is the best time to find ESL teaching work in Canada and most schools are looking for teachers as I type this.

Assuming you are a Canadian (or have a work permit) work should not be difficult to find. HOWEVER, all of the good schools require their teachers to have TESL Canada-certified training. Your online certificate won't get you anywhere with the good schools, part-time or otherwise.

What are the established schools?

There only seems to be two or three well known schools in Montreal. Other than that, of four pages on pagesjaunes.ca, the rest seem to be rather small ... and websites never mention certification through TEFL Canada.

A school that is a member of CAPLS must have TESL Canada-recognized teachers. (See page 17 of their Quality Standards doc.) Membership in CAPLS is usually posted on a school's website under "Affiliations". CAPLS has a list of the language schools that are members at http://www.capls.com/en/study/school_search_results.asp?filter=true&prov=Any&snav=2. There are a few in Montreal:

- ACADMIE LINGUISTIQUE INTERNATIONALE- ALI
- CANADA LANGUAGE CENTRES MONTREAL (CENTRE LINGUISTA)
- GEOS LANGUAGE ACADEMY MONTREAL
- INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE SCHOOLS OF CANADA (ILSC)
- LANGUAGE STUDIES CANADA (LSC)
- MONTRAL INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE CENTRE (MILC) - LASALLE COLLEGE
- POINT3 LANGUAGE CENTER

I guess you could call the CAPLS members "established schools" since membership implies quality of instruction, etc. and gives them a foot up on the competition. New schools would be wise to follow suit if they want to compete in a serious way with the CAPLS members.
