Not that I am going to I just want to know where I stand.
I know it may differ for certain countries but take China/Poland/South Korea for example. |

Ummm well... it really depends on the contract. Every contract will have different clauses. I mean the contract I signed said if I quit then I have to pay for the schools new teacher until the course ends. In China it was that they could fine me $2000US for leaving-which I did and they diddn't.
Basically it usually envolves you paying them money. |

Some of these TEFL outfits still get away with conning newbies into thinking that their pieces of paper are real contracts.
What is the punishment, do a runner and nobody can catch you. Of course your new outfit is probably going to be no better but after a few years you learn that and either put up with a less bad outfit or get out of TEFL and get a real job. |

hehe. Went to an information session the other day at Hamline University, a local private college. I left with the impression that it was a school with wonderful facilities and dedicated faculty.
Here's the kicker, though. A masters degree in teaching with ESL licensure would take a minimum of 2-2.5 years at about $30k in tuition. They estimated that the starting pay for ESL in Minnesota is $28k/yr.
How does that math work out for you? I'm left with the impression that it is a field for people with rich parents, spouses, or Mother Theresa-types that can try to repay a student loan on $15/hr.
I'm planning to attend there, but in the EFL program...the public school licensure track looks rather insane. |

...amongst those for whom it is a field:
backpackers
nutters
those who cannot get jobs in their countries with their irrelevant degrees
drunks
drifters
those married to foreigners
the unqualified
the unemployable elsewhere
etc. |

I think that a BA degree and a TEFL cert should/normally is enough to start work.
They can't ask for more than that.
I certainly will not be taking a masters degree that's for sure. Only a TEFL Diploma at most.
I mean say 600 quid a month, yet you have a student loan ect.
How does this; you have a 17 000 quid student loan debt fresh from university. You pay nothing back until you earn at LEAST 15 000 a year.
After 25 years, whether you pay zero or all of it abck it gets cleared none the less. If you die it gets cleared also.
What if I work abroad as a TEFL teacher for 25 years? Do I still get pinned?
And no I won't be clearing it before I leave, I would be old and grey by then.
LOL. |

TEFL is just too easy to get into and then too difficult to get out of if you stay in it more than say, ten years.
Julian Edge a TEFL academic (sic) who used to work at Aston University put it something like this:
TEFL sucks you in when you are young and have no dependants and then spits you out when you are older and have dependants. |

Why?
Fear of not finding a job, setting yourself up with accommodation when back in your country, been abroad too long.
Thousands of questions regarding that. |
