What happens when you finish working and your employer notifies immigration that you no longer work there (ie terminates your visa)? How long do you have to get out of the country? What happens if you want to hang around? Do you need to switch to a tourist card?

I believe that after you submit a letter stating you intend to leave and no longer work in Mexico, they give you 30 days to leave the country, and ask you to surrender your FM3 to immigration before you leave.

I'm not quite sure what happens if you tell them you want to stay longer than 30 days as a non-working tourist. I've been told that immigration will not issue an FMT but instead put some kind of update in your FM3 and tell you to surrender it when ready.

It used to be we never new about cancelling or terminating FM3s, when a teacher left they just left. Then we had a teacher come back, after a two year absense. She had to cancel her previous FM3 to get a new one. It wasn't much of a hassel on the immigration side, but she ended up with a different RFC (tax payer) number then she had the first time, and to get that straightened up was a major hassel. She married a Mexican and while they currently reside in the US, they just might live in Mexico again so she really wanted to get it all straightened out because as a result she had two AFORES, two Infonavit funds, two IMSS numbers, etc. So just keep an eye on your numbers if you find yourself in a similar situation.

Hi,
When many foreigners continually quit working for a very unpleasant school owner in Tuxtla, she threatened that she would immediately notify immigration and their FM-3 visas would be immediately revoked. When I also quit, I went to immigration and they told me the FM-3 was valid until its expiration date. I used this FM-3 to go to Belize and return with no problem in the Mexican immigration computers. 30 days before the expiration, I applied for an extension and had to pay for the extension plus an additional 1,600 pesos for changing my employer. That's my experience but I can't guarantee it will work for everyone.
