Hi, I'd be grateful if anyone could suggest the most reputable companies in Taiwan for a newbie like myself. I'm looking to experience the culture (I've never left Europe before) but I'd also like to think I could hook up with other european/oz/nz natives, is this quite common or would I need to stick with a particular company or school? Also, I do not currently have any tefl qualification, can anyone suggest what my best move would be? (I live in the UK) I mean I could go teach for 1 year or 20, that's the kinda way I'm thinking at the moment. Any help much appreciated!

ps: are there any networking sites for english teachers in taiwan apart from this forum?

I know a lot of people on this forum have negative things to say about Hess and Kojen. However, I think for someone new to Taiwan and with no previous teaching experience they are a good choice.

Both these schools will provide you with some training and support. You are not merely thrown into the classroom. They might pay slightly less than other schools, but at least you can be sure you will get paid on time. They will offer you plenty of hours if you are a good reliable teacher (and perhaps shaft you if you are not). The way the hours are scheduled can be a problem though, especially working on weekends. Also these schools often don't let you choose the branch you work at. The management and overall experience tends to vary from branch to branch. The branch you work at may have a lot to do with your satisfaction working there.

Their are schools that seem to prefer the English accent. Simply put it on your resume and send it out.
