I saw an advert for this school seeking certified school teachers and I'm thinking of applying. Is anyone out there familiar with this school? It looks like a great place. |

it is a terrible place. a couple of years ago, they somehow got a copy of my cv and contacted me. they were very rude and aggressive thoughout the recruitment process. while i was still trying to figure out who they were and how they got my email address, they demanded that i turn up the next day for an interview and be prepared to start work the following monday. u will be required to teach in the regular school during the day and at their conversation school in the afternoon. of course they charge their students extra for these after school courses. here is a copy of the contract. read the fine print. u can get fired for any reason, including if someone thinks u are insulting....... ie you dont say good morning. THIS IS IMMEDIATE. and no sex, even at your own home with a consenting adult because this is immoral. also, u are forced to contribute to your own end of contract bonus. of course u lose this is u are terminated. the salary is 8-10 million plus 1 million for housing. u can get a small house in the area for 10-20 million per year, but u have to pay everything up front. here is a copy of the contract:

The school I was enquiring about is located in the Alam Sutera development outside Jakarta. The contract you showed me was very different than the one I've seen. I do appreciate your help, but I am sure we are dealing with different schools.
I've since heard from other sources that the school has a decent reputation, and I've already signed the contract. See you all in a couple months!

Well I work for SL and I'm afraid I don't recognise wanabee's description of it! The bit about housing certainly isn't true and I just don't recognise the other stuff. Some ascetic grapes from someone, perhaps? |

You may notice that the contract posted above is with Tunas Muda and not with SL. The Tunas Muda organisation has some kind of relationship with SL and, I believe, provides teachers for English courses. |

Yeah, you're right Papua - I didn't read that bit correctly.
OSSC St. Laurensia is a language school that operates within the campus of St. Laurensia school. Their terms and conditions are very different from those that apply to those of us working at SL as regular school teachers. There is a relationship between Tunas Muda and OSSC.
Wannabee is NOT talking about St. Laurensia itself, and I can't comment about Tunas Muda because I don't know anything about that school.
Problem solved. |

St. Laurensia, sounds like a fine place to work, I should be joining your ranks in July, if everything works out with the visas and all.
I noticed that we have some fellow motorcyclists over there. Please PM me and let me know what to bring in that regard. I understand that I can't import a V-strom 1000 into the country.
Cheers,

glad to see that TP and gugelhupf sorted that out. sorry about the confusion. they represented themselves as SL when they were recruiting me, but obviously a bit of deception. previously i had heard good things about them as well, but that encounter had put me off ever applying to them. i wouldnt have posted a reply at all if it hadnt been ossc laurensia at the top of the contract. good luck trebek, i sure everything will be great. |

one of the absolute worst places to work. Tunas Muda and OSSC and St. Laurensia are connected somehow, who knows exactly, probably money laundering. Feel free to jump at such a splendid opportunity......as you sit there and wait till the little alarm goes off at 3:30 and you can finally leave, after clocking in at 7:00 am....perhaps to teach one class.
The French Canadian...Gaylord Marsolisssss is a real strong leader and will never tell you two stories....or lie to you. His english is worse than my Thai 1st yr. students. Go for it........it will be an experience that you'll always, I mean never regret/forget.
Good luck, sucker ! |

So is it a good place or a bad place to work as an English teacher? Seems there is some conflict? |
