Newbie myself and just wondering. In Europe, Poland, it's usually September till June. How do you finance yourself?

Where I teach, I don't have that problem. My summer break is 3 weeks long, and it's paid vacation time.

I see a lot of summer camp jobs on tefl.com. Are there other sites that list them? If not summer camps, what else?

Most people here in Spain go to the UK for a couple of months and teach bratty summer school kids.
I have to say that Spain is the first time I've experienced a nine month "contract": definite chocolate teapot territory.
If you want to avoid it then get yourself off to Asia, and if you can't stand going that far then year-round contracts can be found in Paris too.

Why do you think people want to work at universities?

A major factor in helping people stick it out in the Gulf is the 2 month summer holiday ...

Where I work, I get paid for holidays and so forth. But I have worked in a few pre-sessional courses at universities back home in the UK. Pay is good, but you need a lot of experience and or a DELTA

I just remembered, the Korea board also advertises summer camps-at the last second of course. Expect tons of ads on June 18th about how they need someone to start on Jun 19th.

A nine month contract means that you have to think about private lessons to make sure that you do not NEED to work in a summer school and can be selective about where you next work. Many newbie teflers end up not planning for their summer and then teach summer school when they do not want to and from this they gain a negative impression never earn the money they could and have to return abroad to a crappily paid job that is a 'guarantee' as they can no onger afford to stay in their home country until the college or language school jobs become available later in the year. Itis sometimes better to apprach your employer and ask if there are any jobs going over the summer.
