Hello. I am applying to the Japanese government's Monbusho scholarship to study Japanese. Is there anyone that has won this scholarship who can tell me how competitive it is? In general, how difficult is it to win any scholarship to study Japanese in Japan? Are there many of these kinds of scholarships, because I really don't have the money to pay for a year or two of intensive Japanese language study. Thank you. |

As far as I know, the Monbukagakusho scholarships are not just a language training program. You generally have to be studying something else and will be enrolled in a university faculty with some language training on the side. It's highly competitive; the year I applied, there were four scholarships for the whole of the country but that was a few years back so maybe it's changed. From what I see on the internet, the amount of money per scholarship seems to have dropped (135,000yen for undergrads, 175,000yen for graduates)
