|
|
Hi all
My boyfriend and I are currently doing a CELTA couse in Melbourne, Australia and we'd like to teach overseas from about Sept/Oct this year. We both have degrees and other training qualifications but have't actually taught apart from our observed classroom sessions on the CELTA course.
I'm looking for tips, tricks and advice in securing a decent position without having much 'front of room' teaching experience on my resume.
Asia is our preferred destination.
Thanks in advance for your help. |

No experience? Than Asia is the place for you. In fact for many schools that is ideal. Look at Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China as easily obtainable places for getting a job. I recommend reading up on the posts for these countries and then narrow down where you'd like to go.
Good luck with your CELTA, it is a lot of work but very worthwhile. |

There are zillions of jobs in Asia, especially China.
Tell the schools to give you some contact information for any teachers that have worked for them. A good school will have no problem with putting you in touch with a current/former teacher. |

I am also an Aussie here in China with my boyfriend. All we had was a degree, no TEFL, no experience and we easily got a job here. We've been here a couple of months and love it. We're teaching at a Primary School and the class prep is very simple and easy. China is a great place to teach, the money isn't much by Oz standards but we live very comfortably here and save money too. If you want any info, Personal Message me. We got the job via a good agency, I'll give you the details if you need them. Please don't hesitate to ask questions, it wasn't so long ago I was in your same situation. |

Well...................if you are not married you can rule out Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. No visas for cohabiting couples. |

Same boat: newly qualified, very little teaching experience, and no luck getting a job so far. I really don't want to go to Asia but it may be the only option I have to get experience. |

I really want to teach in Latin America (I have travelled there and like the culture and lifestyle) but I've read mixed stories about the difficulty of finding a decent full-time job there. When I completed my TEFL certificate I immediately accepted a 1-year contract working in Indonesia.
I've come to regret my hasty decision. The first six months of my contract were okay but unexciting, and now I'm more than ready to return home and search for work in LA. I suppose a good point is that when I go home I'll have some money saved up and a full year of teaching experience under my belt.
If I could offer some advice to you, try signing up for only a six-month contract. Although you may not earn any bonuses such as a return flight home, at least then you have the option of renewing if happy or moving on to another school. |

Asia, South America, parts of Europe, depending on your citizenship. Tefl.com is a good place for jobs, and of course Dave's. Dav'es has a lot of Asian jobs. |

Suzula and others,
Don't rule out Asia, without trying it. I'm pretty much a life long, Latinoamericaphile, but I also spent a 18 months in Japan. My finacial situation lead me there, but much to my surprise, I LOVED IT! I fell into a job in Nara and was able to really explore the ancient culture of Japan, but was equally facinated by the modern lures of the Shinsaibashi area of Osaka. Granted, I'm now back in Latin American and happy here, but I wouldn't trade my time in Japan for anything. |
