I think that Sapporo and Kyoto are very hard to get jobs in. I tried looking in Sapporo but gave up after a while.

what kind of work do you mean? eikaiwa, dispatch companies? teaching kids? It all depends on peoples preferences, qualifications, time of year. Number of job openings at a dispatch company or BOE.

whether you want to work in Tokyo or Hokkaido or in a small provincial city in Niigata. Smaller cities tend to have less jobs, and less competition for places as not everyone wants to be one of a dozen foreigners in the whole town.

Kyoto everyone wants to live here because of the 'culture' but its a small city of only half a million people. Maybe half a dozen language schools in Kyoto city.

Try maybe Shikoku for lack of jobs.

Naoshima

Shodoshima

Maybe one school between them both.

Sado Island, maybe Tokdo Islands (which the Koreans and the Japanese are currently scrapping over sovereignty).

I did apply for a job once which was midway between Kyushu and Okinawa, about 200 residents on the island. Better like solitude if you go there.

Nobody really lives on the Liancourt Islands. There's a few fisherman that spend part of the year there, as well as some gov't officials/police/navy/etc. They are all Korean.

Kyoto and Okinawa are very difficult places to find work in because they are so highly requested by teachers (Kyoto has the temples and traditional stuff, Okinawa has the warm weather and beaches). I think Sapporo in Hokkaido is also a tough place to find work simply because there are so many people here who enjoy winter sports or hate the hot and sticky Japanese summers.

Obviously, finding jobs in a rural area outside of JET is going to be tough simply because of the scarcity of the schools looking for native English teachers.

In terms of major cities, I personally think Osaka is a terrible place to find work. Granted, there are jobs here, but there are not nearly as many DECENT jobs as you'd expect given the size of the city.
