Homestay looks like a great option. I will be taking the homestay option for my first two weeks in CR. I will be looking for work in the San Jose area for 6 months following that, does anyone have any opinions on this? Is homestay much like being a guest in someones house, or are you left to do you own thing without much intervention from the landlady/lord? Are there any rules/closing door times? Would anyone advise against me doing homestay during my whole time there?

Any opinions welcomed.

If you have read my previous posts, you will see that i am totally in favour of a good homestay especially for the first month or so. This gives you time to search out the many areas, and believe me, there are so many outlying areas of San Jose that you will need time to visit them all and see where you want to live and work.

At the house i stayed in in Heredia, you were totally on your own. The upstairs rooms have their own entrance so you didnt even go thru the house at all. When you are in the main parts of the house of course you have respect for the other guests and to Zeneida , the owner, but there were no rules per say. You have your own keys and come and go as you please.

If youd like more information check out my older posting, Need a Homestay for more details.

there have been quite a few posters from this site who have stayed there, maybe theyd like to reply????

good luck
cheers
d

Thanks d,
sounds like homestay is a good idea. I did see your other posts, you speak highly of your particlar homestay, is this the view in general? Are most homestays as good?

I had an OK homestay, and it can be a nice experience, but you will likely experience some culture clash. there's always the possibility that your tica mama will want you to call her if you're not going to be home and generally treat you like a 16-year-old (most ticos live with their parents until they're married... even if they're 30-year-old professionals)

Just take this as a warning to be cautious, and probably get some referals, and ask yourself if by this point in your life you would be comfortable with a parent figure that pokes around in your stuff all the time.
