I'm 57 (58 in November) and just finishing a uni TESL certificate to add to my BA hons. I had part time TESL experience in PNG for three years - about 8 years ago. I'll start looking for work in Indonesia in June/July, but am a bit concerned about the age limit of 60 for a KITAS. Will this make schools less willing to employ a 57-58 year old, given that they could expect two years from me at the most? Has anyone got a feel for this?

This shouldn't be a problem. A two year commitment is about as long as any employer might reasonably expect - most expect no more than a year.
The above applies to reputable employers. At 'entry level' (certain franchise chains) so long as you speak English and can manage to walk unaided to the classroom your age is unlikely to be a factor. |

I'm not sure that we should delude ourselves here. Even Kantor Immigrasi is supposed to follow the rules at times. I've been assured that they will not give an approving telex to applicants over 60.
So to the young guy of 57, do your teaching now, as you may not have many more years to do this in Indonesia.
China seems to be a bit easier in this regard, so with some experience in Indonesia, you should have no problems moving on from there.
I've mentioned in another forum that EF will not take on anyone over retirement age, according to an email I had from the UK recruiting office. |

Thanks to both of you. It's good to get some feedback from people who are hands-on.... Dave |
