Hey, I was s'posed to be going to Thailand to teach for a year but now all of a sudden will probably be going to China instead. I'll be heading to Chiang mai first and hope to fly to south east China after a few days, but all my research is for Thailand, have ye any newbie forums or places I can get alot of newbie info very quickly. Can I just arrive without a visa from a short stop in Thailand first or do I have to get one before arrive, thats the main Q I have. Cheers.

Read all the stickies, then read the first 3 or 4 pages of topics on this China topics about the education system. You'll wade through some dreck, but will probably find a few informative and interesting postings.

Are you talking about Chinese visa? If so, then get one beforehand or get one in Thailand. Your choice, either way works.

Some places in mainland China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) grant you a TOURIST VISA upon arr4ival by air; these places include Haikou in Hainan and Tianjin near Peking. Shenzhen also grants visas upon arrival on its land border - but in all these cases, you canNOT upgrade to a residence permit since these visas are granted to tourists only - no change of status conceivable!
