Someone mentioned in another thread that a CELTA can actually be harmful for applicants planning to teach in Japan. I am aware that all you need to teach in Japan is a degree, but as I am really interested in teaching (and doing a good job of it!) I was planning on getting a CELTA before going over. I don't plan on teaching at one of the bigger eikawas, but hopefully a smaller school where I will be able to implement my own lesson plans and use some creativity.
Anyway, to get to the point is: Is getting a CELTA worth it for teaching specifically in Japan? |

Getting a CELTA isnt necessary for Japan but will be useful when you leave if you wish to continue teaching.
The reason that eikaiwas could be suspicious of anyone with a formal education in TEFL or Applied Linguistics is because you will then be aware of the total crap which you are expected to spout on a daily basis.
Having said that as long as you dont point out the faults of the system youll be fine. There are thousands of eikaiwa teachers with CELTAs. |
