This gladdened my heart enormously...in this country noted for its widespread venality and greed: A professional is spending his spare time collecting recyclable refuse that he sells in order to sponsor some kids through school!
Yes, you may have heard of Project Hope or orf Oxfam, Khamaid and others, but this is a one-man initiative, and not by a billionaire!
Engineer Chen Geng has decided to help children in rural China attend school; he collects drink cans and bottles as well as discarded paper and cardboards and resells them; the proceeds are used to pay for Miao children's schooling.
Recently he sold 20'000 empty and discarded plastic bottles at 1 jiao each, making yuan 2000.
No small feat for someone who works twice as long as any regular foreign teacher during the latter's contracted working hours. Maybe, maybe, we could all pitch in with a little cash generated so easily - for the benefit of those who will never see a classroom managed by one of us... |

Hi William,
nice post, thanks for the moral booster! When I read about people like Mr CHen then I feel we westerners ought to encourage them to go on in their endeavours! There are none too many of his kind, and as for beggars, they do seem to grow exponentially! I understand thoroughly your heart's beat, but when I see a scavenger and a beggar, my respect is reserved for the former and thus I am more likely to give him alms. About 2 years ago, I saw a young and rather pretty girl collecting empty cans and paper in Guangzhou's mean streets; I ran up to her and shoved 10 kuai her way, ignoring several beggars in the neighbourhood.
I thought: if a girl with her LOOKS stoops "so low" as to do this kind of work she deserves much more than money to survive - she after all is not offering her body to all and sundry for a one-hundred yuan bill. |
