I am planning to go to Thailand in a couple of weeks, but I'm waiting for a job placement before I go. Do I have to be in my home country to obtain a non-immigrant visa or can I get it in Thailand while I'm on the 30 day tourist visa? I want to be in Bangkok a week before the school semester starts. |

It's a lot easier to get the non-B from your home country,
if you land a firm job & can swing a letter of employment.
If you arrive in Thailand on a tourist visa, you'll need to
fly to Malaysia, Singapore or Hong Kong for the non-B.
Air Asia offers the best deals on regional tickets, fyi.
Some people manage to get their non-B in Vientiane,
but you'll need to have all your paperwork in order.
The basic rule of thumb for non-Bs seems to be this:
the farther away you are from Thailand, the easier.
Don't ask me why - that's just the way it is.

Not really true as it can depend on your home country (India is a nightmare, NZ is also etc.) and where you apply in your home country. Also a Brit in the States has as much right to obtain one as an American...so not a big difference to be honest. More down to if the Consulate you're using is friendly (although some nationalities have real nightmares).
Let me know where you are etc. and I can probably help. But it will indeed generally be necassary (sp?) to have paperwork....have you???
Alternatively it is possible for your employer to convert a tourist Visa into a Non-imm B (in theory and occasionally in practice). |

So you need to get a letter of employment first before obtaining a non imm B visa? How easy is it to get a non imm B visa if your from Canada applying in Canada? You mentioned that some nationalities have real nightmares. Hopefully Canada isn't one of them. And with reguards to finding a job in Thailand, is it best to get one lined up over the internet first? Or is it best to just walk into the country first and then start looking?

That's correct.

Should be easy with a letter of employment,
but I'd rather let kenkannif confirm that.
If you can't swing the Non-B from Canada,
you should apply for a 60 Day Tourist Visa.

Up to you.
The consensus of opinion is that you'll find a better deal
after you're on the ground --- with a mobile phone
on your belt, an updated resume in your hand
and a few neatly pressed shirts & ties.
It's possible to land a position over the internet,
but most schools don't want to pay airfare
& many schools won't make a firm offer -
until they've met you face to face.
At the very least, you can send out your resume
and set up a few interviews before you arrive.
After you land a job & sign on the dotted line,
you can pick up the Non-B in Malaysia, Singapore
or maybe Vientiane, if all your paperwork is in order.
Worst case scenario;
After your 60 days + extension have expired,
you do monthly visa-runs, which isn't really so bad
with so many express visa-bus services available now
running back and forth daily between Bangkok & Cambodia.
For details on these services, see FAQ 2.2 located
in Appendix B of The Master Index Thailand.
Good luck, John !

Whereabouts are you in Canada and what is your nearest Consulate/Embassy (as my geography is rubbish).

Nah most Westerners are okay, it's harder for like Asians, Middle Easterners and Africans (as well as some others).

Best to get a job on arrival really.
PM me if you like and I'll help as much as I can in regards to a Visa. |
