Heading:Russian drivers playing roulette
"PERTH drivers are often dubbed the worst in the world, but Sydney cartoonist Warren Brown says they don't even come close to the appalling drivers he encountered on Russian roads.
He should know. Brown drove from Beijing to Paris in a 100-year-old Itala car last year to re-create an extraordinary 1907 expedition... and no rivers (on the trip) matched the manic Russians on the 60-day journey from China to Mongolia through the Gobi Desert and along the nightmare of Siberian roads; through the Urals, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium and finally into France, he said.
"We were driving in Siberia and there are these drivers from Vladivostok who pick up all these second-hand Japanese cars and drive them to
Moscow." Brown said the youngsters, who had barely learnt to drive and were terrified of being away from Moscow, drove nose-to-tail in long convoys as fast as they could.
"They were overtaking road trains at phenomenal speeds, like 150km/h," he said. "I was terrified when they were on the road.
On this particular morning, I saw the lead driver look at my car and he touched his brakes and they went bang, bang, bang into each other. The first one skidded full circle through a fence into a paddock, the second went down the road end-on-end and the third went into him, so there were bits of car landing all around us...I had a windscreen go over my head and a bumper bar and all this other stuff raining on the road," he said. "We saw quite a few fatal accidents," Brown said. "Perth drivers ... don't have a patch on the Russian drivers in Siberia. They win the prize.""
