If schools are willing to accept teachers with only BA and experience, which schools would you recommend applying to? I'm actually suprised by how few ads there are posted by schools looking for ESl teachers. I presumed that English language instruction was in high demand in the UAE. is it? |

Choueifat, for one, will definitely hire BAs with not certification and no experience. There's a price you pay, however, for taking jobs like these. I think it's safe to say that they are still looking for teachers in some of their Gulf schools. Proceed with caution, though. It's ok if you are working on classroom management skills. Otherwise, a professional headache at best. |

If you see language academies in the UAE advertising for teachers, run the other way. |

hhmmm I am still young so maybe it wouldn't be a bother. I have had to put up with a lot of b.s. in Taiwan so perhaps this wouldn't be any worse. just as long as I get paid on time. how much do you think the average pay would be for someone with a B.A. and 3 years experience? is it worth it in relation to the cost of living? |

You'd want an employer who arranges your accommodation for you. Some places provide shared accommodation, while others might give you a studio. If one of these employers (the ones who hire non-qualified without MA) offers you a package and tells you to get your own accommodation, there's a good chance that you will not live comfortably enough. I recall being paid 5200 dirhams/month with accomodation in 1998 (Sharjah) and later 7000 dirhams/month plus accommodation in 2002 (Dubai). You won't save lots living in Dubai. If you like the nightlife and good restaurants, you will live paycheck to paycheck at best (this is with no debts). If, however, you opt for a smaller emirate (Sharjah, Al Ain, Ajman, Fujairah, RAK) you will likely live a quieter existence as well as a cheaper one. I was able to save in Sharjah, but 8 years ago there were no malls there, no great restaurants, and only The Wanderers (British Expat club) for a watering hole. The cinemas at that time were below average and cheap. Things, however, have changed!!
Choueifat places teachers in all the emirates (the smaller ones are usually the last ones to fill) and around the Gulf. If you need more info on Choueifat, please read my other posts. If you end up taking a job with them, please don't say you weren't warned. Good luck! |
