I was wondering if anyone was very familiar with Takaoka in the Toyama Prefecture? This is the city I will be teaching in when I arrive. I did request a more rural setting if possible. Thanks in advance! |

Yep, spent a bit of time in Takaoka. It's a smallish city by japanese standards (about 100 0000 - 200 000 people I guess). fairly close to kanazawa for night life, and not to far from the noto peninsula which is nice. also within striking distance of the japan alps for hiking and snowboarding. |

Hey! Toyama person here! If I had to pick a place to live in Toyama it would be Takaoka! Some nice restaurants and clubs and stuff, and the best proximity to the civilized world in Toyama (that is, closest to Kanazawa and then kansai). There is a big and active population of English teachers over there. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here. |

If you requested a rural place, Takaoka is a good one. Its a beautiful area surrounded by the Sea of Japan and the Tateyama Mountains.
Summer is hot and humid, fall is cool and dry, winter will bring a lot of snow, spring will bring rain and the tulip festival in nearby Tonami.
Theres plenty of shopping, restaurants, karaoke, bars, and sightseeing in the area.
Ive seen a lot of blogs by people living in Toyama Prefecture, so do a search on blogger.com and you'll get a lot of info.
If youd like to know something more specific, please ask.
Good luck. |
