I would like to get your views on whether an experienced EFL teacher can expect a rise in salary (say 500RMB a month) on renewal of contract. This is for working as an oral English teacher in a University. |

Short answer, no. Automatic pay rises aren't a Chinese thing. You can ask, but don't take it personally if they decline. |

i suppose it all depends. my school has asked me to stay for next year, so it looks like i hold an advantage if i asked for a pay raise in exchange for staying (i could be wrong). i'm not staying so the question is irrelevant to me now. if your school is in the middle of nowhere, would seem logical that you could squeeze a pay raise out of them, but in other more popular places that have no trouble attracting FTs, they might just keep the salary static.

I say if you are on friendly terms with TPTB, you've done your job well and professionally, you've gotten good feedback from students and/or peers, then a school is often happy about keeping someone like you around and a little extra money is certainly in the cards. Not to brag on myself too much, but in my last two jobs (the current and the previous), I asked for 1000rmb raises and was given by both schools! It doesn't hurt to ask. |
