What did people bring with them to start?

Last time I had a bunch of travellers cheques as recommended by a school but this time don't want to do that.

Thinking a certain amount in Am$ or Yen. Yen if I can get it but doubt it. After that my bank debit card in Japan. It's on the plus system though sometimes certain plus ATMs in India didn't work. Citibank seemed best. I don't have a credit card.

Plus cards will work in post office atms. I'd bring some cash with me, but keep most of your money in your home branch and use the atm.

Thanks Gordon!

Sounds good and the best part is that the Canadian dollar is so high right now.

Not good for me. It was 76 to the dollar 4 years ago when I came and now it is over 100. It hit 106 a month ago, so this is a bit better. What's with the Cdn buck, it is getting up to the greenback?

How much you bring with you depends on too many circumstances for me to reply.

Are you coming on the JET programme?
Are you coming without a job in hand?
Are you coming with a job sponsored by one of the Big Four?

Are you going to job hunt in Tokyo? Kagoshima? Sapporo? Wajima?
Do you have friends to stay with?

What time of year are you coming?

In Japan, it is about 101 if you want to buy Cdn dollars. Perhaps we can do a swap. Want to buy about 400,000 yen?
