Hi everyone.
I need some information/advice from the more experienced folks out there. I have a PGCE with QTLS with subject specialist in ESOL from the University of Wolverhampton (UK). In addition, I have 3 years experience teaching ESOL to children at a primary school and adults in college. I would like to start venturing outside the UK now and explore opportunities somewhere in the world.
Question: Where in the world shall I start? What countries would you recommend? What are my chances of landing myself a job in the Middle East as an ESL instructor? And also would you recommend the British Council jobs?
I just think I am asking for a bit too much sometimes (salary wise) as I am currently on 20 pounds an hour here in the Midlands. What kind of salary do you think I should be aiming for or rather will get for my type of qualifications and experience?
Thanks a lot.

I think you need to consider what sort of cultures you would feel comfortable in.
Also, consider the isolation of certain jobs (JET Program, for example, where you are likely to be put in a very rural environment in Japan). |

If you have a PGCE and three years experience then look into the British international schools for the higher salaries. |

Thanks alot. I think I can fit in fairly well in different cultures but isolation is a no go area for me. I think i'll try Saudi. I can speak Arabic so I think I might get by. |

When you work overseas it is often good to think more in terms of bottom line savings - not income.
While you might earn less than you would "back home" very low or no income taxes, free housing, free airplane tickets and much greater amounts of paid holiday time might make 15UKP overseas far more atttractive than 25UKP at home. Your bottomline savings might be far greater overseas.
I've been working overseas since 1989 and only for a few years in Saudi did I earn anything near what my wages were in the USA before I left (even now I earn less) - but my overall savings have been FAR better than they were then. |
