Hi all,
I am hoping to teach in Mexico starting around the first of the year. My background is a BA in Spanish and International Relations, and have worked for the past two years along the border on the U.S. side working with grant administration, and running a youth organization. I had several questions I was hoping for some help with. First of all, what kind of savings would y'all recommend before leaving the U.S.? I have also read how some cities are harder than others to find work in, are there any ways to gauge whether there would be work in a particular city?
Any info would be really helpful. Thanks so much for all your help. |

Lets see... most folks advocate coming here with about $2000 USD. I think thats to be absolutely sure you have enough to live on for 2-3 months and even that seems a bit high to me. However, expenses do pile up when you dont expect them and better to have too much than too little.
As for jobs... its like everything else... you go where the money is. DF and the surrounding area is probably best then followed by the other major metro areas. Im just west of DF, by the way.
Youre best best with your qualifications is with a language school. Not the best of jobs but you can live on it, most of the time if youre frugal.
Granted, I will admit that I have not taken this route. I was lucky to be offered a good job (I have an MA in English) while I was still in the States. My advice is kinda third-hand from people I have read here and talked to.
Bottom line... you can find work but you wont get rich! |
