DF needs a Barnes and Nobles or a Borders Bookstore.
I spent 3 hours looking for a cheap novel to read and what a trek!
I finally ended up at El Globo on Calle Gente near the Bella Artes. Not a very good selection though.
Any place better out there that any of you all know about?

Do you mean DF needs a big bookstore with a decent selection of English-language novels? Or does it need to be a Barnes & Noble or a Borders?
What about markets - does DF have any that are good for books? |

Ghandi Bookstore might offer what you're looking for. For a simple trashy paperback, Sanborn's has an English selection.
Apparently, there are a few places around for used books...probably in the centro somewhere. |

Ajarn Ernes. Don't you miss those great English bookstores on Sukumvit
and the ones in Pattaya? No problem finding good English reading material there. Even here in Korea, (Yes I'm back in Korea now), there are some pretty big bookstores with a large English selection, such as Kyobo in Seoul and Pusan. Mexico seems "a bit" behind the times.

I don't care what the name of the store is.
I tried Ghandi and they said they only had books in Spanish. Is there just not a big enough expat community here to support having at least ONE good English Language bookstore in a city this BIG? Or are all the expats here illiterate?

American Bookstore in Bolivar (I believe. Next one over from Gante?)
In Gante, and in an arcade joining Gante to Bolivar there are at least 2 bookstores that sell textbooks and novels in English.
Got a Lonely Planet for Mexico/Mexico City? Look in there, they're all listed. |

I'm sorry. I fail to see why Mexico City needs a big English language bookstore. But then I read in Spanish. Sure it would be nice. But I think most of the 30 million people in Mexico perfer to read in Spanish. I have found English books at Ghandi. And I've found loads in the used book store street somewhere near the torre Latin Americano (sorry I haven't been to DF for 4 years so my memory is getting hazy.) There is also a book fair every year, I've bought English books there before.
There is an EXCELLENT little bookshop in Oaxaca that specializes in books in the broad area of Latin American Studies, literature, culture, cooking, archeology, etc. About 75% of their stock is in English. The store is called Amate Books, its on Macedonia Alcala two blocks before Santo Domingo if your coming from the Zolcalo. They have a great bargin bin, and I consider one book from the bargin bin the price of any trip to Oaxaca City.
If all else fails there is always Amazon.com |

I second this recommendation. It's got quite a decent selection of English books and magazines. They also have some "bilingual" books in both Spanish and English, which I really like. |
