I have searched a few threads here at the Qatar forum and have not found abundant information on teaching at the Qatar Petroleum Project. Does anyone have any general information to share about them (ie: how is the administration, how are the students, benefits package etc.)?
I checked their website but apparently it hasn't been updated since September 2005 .

most appreciated. |

Hey, that is a BAD DEAL. Twenty-five hours of teaching and they give you a 2,000 QR housing allowance. A decent one-bedroom apartment will cost you between 5 and 8,000 QR. |

Hey,
I know 2 people who are presently working there and they describe the place as (GULAC in British). This job is known for English teachers who want to be punished! Unbelievable!
25 teaching contact hours (WOW! STOP!)
Share apartment (Come on!)
9000 QR/Month: A joke?
Locked in a portacabin for 40 hours/week: Relax!
4 weeks vacation/year (What the hell?)
Managers: Can't even communicate in English! (TOO MUCH!)
Share a car (This is really too much!)
2000 QR/Month for housing ( Oh shit! In Qatar, 5000 QR/Month you could rent just a decent studio)
What else do you want to know?
If you want to be punished, then take the job, and get back to me when you regret! |

Thanks for the heads-up. Doesn't sound attractive at all. I'll be sure check them OFF the list. |

This can't possibly be true. From what I hear ALL the management have been promoted in the last year. |

Sorry! I Forgot to mention that as an English instructor, your senior instructor is your immediate boss. This man at the moment, can't really speak English (Palesinian), has no clue about education, curriculum development, Professional development, and the list goes on, works may be 2 or 3 hours a day, doing what? Answering the phone, fax, arrange schedule,......
Now, you will be making 9000 QR/Month, and this non-native makes 24,000 QR/Month. Be informed that he is not the only one, There are tons of them making closer money and sitting their fat asses all day long. Also, the majority of English teachers are non native, come from Sudan, Tunisia, Syria and India. These guys who have all NON-WESTERN degrees make same money like natives while their education back in their homes cost absolutely nothing compared to US, UK, Australia....
Logically, 9000 QR is a lot of money in their own countries, but for a westerner is a peanut salary . On top of that, because they have WASTA (Influence) , they are usually given 20 hours/week, and most of westerners minimum 24/week. When you ask, why? They reply: Sorry students want native-speakers?????GO FIGURE OUT! |

Does he still drive that browny-orangey coloured car? Occaisionally I see a similar car here in Ist. and it sends a shiver down my spine. |

Re Qatar Petroleum Project
I spoke with TAFE is Western Australia today about their contracts. I was informed that their contract qith QPP will finish at the end of July this year. Does anyone know anything about this? Who may have it next? etc They were not prepared to discuss with me whether they had it again, I got the impression that the woman I spoke with wasn't sure. Though a mute point if the contract is ending, the 2000 spoken about on this site for accommodation is what teachers pay if they require the entire twin share apartment for themselves, or, they are paid this amount if they do not want to utilise the accommodation provided.
Also, I have been reading about Qatar Petrol and Australian TMP sourcing teachers. This got me to thinking. Have I misunderstood the postings? Are QP Qatar Petrol and QPP Qatar Petroleum Project one and the same? My web searches did not provide me with the answer, so I thought I would inquire of those with experience. Thus this posting. Any enlightenment would be much appreciated. |

Griffith University, Quuensland, Australia now apparently has the contract. They advertised in Australian newspapers recently and have so far sent only one instructor that I know of. This is not surprising since salary and conditions are indeed as discussed above: 9000, shared car, etc. Yes, shocking but true and they wonder why no one will come? I'm accustomed to living in a shoebox but refuse to lick road clean with tongue! |

So who here actually works on this contract? No it's NOT shared accommodation, and YES it is shared car...but then who else in Qatar provides any sort of car? Salary IS 9000, and YES 25 contact hours a week in a 40 hour working week. So what is so strange about any of that? Biffinbridge, you go on about 20,000 a month as direct hire, but most of that was school fees and housing allowance. YES the salary is lower than we had at QAC, but at least we have a job.
Lionbrian, if you don't like the conditions, why did you leave Qatar University, or Korea for that matter? Don't whinge if it doesn't suit you. Move on to where ever is the perfect job for you. Oh, yes, and stop whining about "non-native speakers".....sounds more than a touch racist to me (just check out our Lionbrian's posts on all forums). Are you saying that ONLY native speakers can teach their language? Perhaps we should only allow those with 100% Anglo names to post on Dave's???????? |
