Currently, I live and teach in Kaohsiung, and I must say (my opinion)-It's the biggest crap-hole i've ever been to and I've travelled all through europe, america and asia. Won't really sum up why, pretty much ghost got it in the other thread.

My friend tells me Taipei is really cool and states I'll love it, I haven't been there, does anybody have any opinions? Because I might stay on another year there, if it's not hot, then it's back to america.

Taipei is great, in my personal experience (a lot better than a number of allegedly '1st world' cities I've been in).

Look over at the China forum for 5 minutes, and you'll soon be reconciled to Taiwan.

Jamer, I suggest you jump on a train this weekend and check out Taipei for yourself. Have a look around and see what you think.

Taipei and Kaohsiung are different worlds entirely. When my husband and I need a mini-break of civilization, we head to Taipei for the weekend. Great museums, restaurants, pubs, loads of stuff to do. It is almost like being in a different country!

Having said that, the cost of accommodation there and the horrific pollution has kept us where we are in the south (an hour from Kaohsiung). We are leaving Taiwan in a month, and we keep saying that if we ever came back, we would head to Taipei instead because it is so much more liveable in many ways...but I highly doubt we would ever come back (have been here for 6 years already). I think that there are far better places overseas to live and work in than anywhere in Taiwan.

My suggestion to you would be to not give up entirely and head back to the USA...why not try another country first? If Kaohsiung was your first overseas experience, I can understand the desire to go back home, but trust me, there are FAR better places out there!!!!! Very Happy

I like Kaohsiung. Been here more than ten years. I like a trip to Taipei a few times a year, but I wouldn't want to live there. The traffic and the expenses are too much.

You could try South Korea (they will also give you housing and pay for your flight) or Japan. Depending on your qualifications, you could also get work in some Middle Eastern countries. If you tell me more about your educational backround, I could probably give you more suggestions (I have done gobs of research!!!!! Very Happy ).

If you're American, you could also do the Peace Corps. I did that for 2 years in Africa. Loved it. Best experience I have ever had in my life.
