They must be soft to burn out on 30 hours. Having been in the cauldron that is public school education in Australia and the UK, where 25 hours is in the classroom and another 20 is meetings, taking substitute classes, preparation and marking, I know.
I worked a single semester in China on 30 hours; main job plus weekend classes. I still had one full day and 3 afternoons off. Take home pay was 15,000 and I still felt relaxed enough to keep up with my post grad studies.
"Burnout" is largely caused by insufficient conditioning. |

i worked about 30-32 hours a week in taiwan, but my work wasnt in one place. i sometimes had a class in one town for a couple of hours, then an hour after that one finished i might have a class in another town 15-20km away, or more. i had to get there on my scooter. might also had to have had dinner in the time in between. during bad weather (heavy rain, esp. this time of year) it was even more difficult. 13 of my hours were at one school, 6 consecutive classes one day, seven the next. that wasnt easy.
so 30 hours in the classroom can be very exhausting, all depends on what else happens outside that 30 hours.

The burn out factor discussed so much is this board is entirely too real. I kept getting sucked into the taking on more classes this year and am now pushing 40/week. The money doens't seem so alluring now. Last minute class cancelations, which used to be a major annoyance for me, are now welcome relief. For next semester, I'm reducing my workload to somewhere under 30 hours and eliminating ANYTHING that involves travel.
I'd say forget that 20-25k a month range that keeps getting floated around on here. It's doable, but you'll certainly suffer for it. 15,000 is a much more reasonalbe goal if you value your mental health, and even 8 -10k isn't that bad if your employer is covering your airfare and housing and only expecting 16-22 hours from you. |
