So, here I am in San Jose, and I want to take advantage of the nightlife. But...it seems that a nightclub is not a nightclub - it's a strip joint. Now, I'm from the UK, where a nightclub means drinking and dancing...with clothes ON. Therefore, my question is, can you lovely people recommend any discos in SJ? And no places that involve lots of young ladies such as can be found in Hotel del Rey, thanks!

Try some of the clubs in "the pueblo" in downtown SJ. Ask anyone where it is, or any cab driver, and they can point you in the right direction. Thats where we went and it was pretty fun. The crowd was mostly young and goodlooking and the beer is cheap. It gets really hot in some of the clubs though... but that is CR for you. Good luck and have fun!

hi

im a big fan of going out dancing as well.... not a big fan of san jose area 1 for its unsafty at night and 2 just the crowd. being from england you might enjoy places more in escazu and santa ana. places are a lot more modern, chill and nicer (they dont look like someone blew up a building and stuck some music in there, like some places in san jose look like) the crowd is totally different. at least for me, im not so suspicious of who's going to rob me for my cell phone or for the 5 mil i have in my pocket. maybe its just my "euro"ness (im greek) but i prefer these bars/ clubs more then san jose's. let me know if i can give you specific names of places...

Hello, IreneM!

Thanks for the info! I haven't tried Santa Ana yet, but do know Escazu a little, especially that bar/dancing/eating joint called...hmmm, can't quite remember the name, but it's something like hakuna matata (or am I thinking of the Lion King???).

El Cuartel is greart on a Monday night, and there are some nice wee bars in that area. There's one just next to Las Bahamas, around 150m east of El Cuartel; european music, lovely people, small and dark (the bar, I mean) - just the way I like it. Also, just opposite El Cuartel is Tribal, and to the left of that is a bar with German beer on tap, and LOUD music videos. Let's ROCK, people!

Must remember to drag my buddies out to Santa Ana sometime. Any recommendations?

So what are the drink prices like at these more "Euro" places?

I'm still in the U.S., but I figured I would ask for furture reference...

Prices, eh?
The place next to Tribal does German draft beer for 600 colones a glass, and the other place, just down from Las Bahamas, is very reasonable - around 1000 for a Tanqueray Gin and tonic, or Bombay Sapphire and tonic. The beers (Imperial/Bavaria/Pilsen) are all around 600/700 per bottle.
I wouldn't exactly call them "euro" places, as they are usually full of ticos and ticas, as is "hakuna matata" in Escazu. Sometimes I'm the only gringo in any of them!
Oh, and if you like fish & chips (or "fries", as you might refer to them), then The Pub in Escazu has Fish & Chips night every Friday, as far as I'm aware.
Finally, if you want to brave the centre, you can try Tica Irlanda, which is about 100m from the notorious Hotel del Rey, on Avenida 1. It's opposite a strip joint called...umm...well, it's opposite a strip joint.

There, didn't forget it this time. Phew!

Hi I have just moved here from Birmingham UK. Talking about good clubs, I went to one on friday in San Jose called Castro's. It had a great atmosphere and no sign of any strippers, just plenty of dancing all night long. I would definately recommend it. Have fun.

Castros is fantastic!! If you're in your 20s, you might try San Pedro ... Terra U or Tavarua on Calle de la Armagura. They're always crowded, but you can dance. Also, the Jazz Cafe in San Pedro is fun, not to dance, though. And the prices are more like US bars. There's a disco in Desemparados, but I can't think of the name. ask around...
